"Because it's there" said George Mallory when asked why he wanted to climb Everest. Born in Mobberley, where his father was rector, the famous mountaineer climbed St Wilfred's Church tower at the age of seven probably for the same reason. The picturesque ancient part of the village, tucked away behind the main road, will have altered little since his lifetime, and neither will the maze of field footpaths. The biggest change must be the proximity of Manchester Airport and planes taking off and landing so close adds interest to the walk.
