One of the very first flowers our granddaughter Heather learned was her namesake. So where better to go for a walk with her than Win Hill, that distinctive Peak District summit which, in August and September, is purple perfection. Win Hill is certainly an impressive destination, in view for miles and when you are walking the high ridge from Mam Tor to Lose Hill it is that distinctively shaped hill on the skyline ahead. Win Hill and Lose Hill are so obviously twinned that it was inevitable that a tale should be told about the army of King Cuicholme of Wessex camped on Lose Hill, while King Edwin of Northumbria, the winner of the conflict, camped on Win Hill. Truth is less poetic and it is probable that Lose Hill refers to pigs, while Win Hill simply means the hill covered in bilberries.
