Just before you turn off the M6 for the Lake District, there's a striking fell rising on your right. We had seen it countless times and kept saying we must go there, but with the high fells beckoning it always got left for another day. Well Farleton Knott, with its white cliffs and acres of limestone pavement rising steeply above grassland and ash woodland in dazzling splendour, is most definitely worth a visit. And what's more you will almost certainly have it all to yourself. On our last visit we met only two people and there aren't many places in the Lakes you can say that about.
