818 Vernon Park, Stockport

Only a stone's throw from the centre of Stockport lies a secret and tranquil valley. That's what we wrote when this walk was first published in the Manchester Evening News. But returning some years later to check the route it looked as though half of Stockport had discovered this tranquil oasis. There was barely room to park a car and a loudspeaker thumped out music. Where was our lovely valley? Soon all became clear, there was a charity event in progress. But to our joy there was hardly anyone in the woods or down by the River Goyt, the birds seemed surprised by our presence while Peregrine Falcons nest on Pear Mill.
