In 2004 the residents of Ashton tired of having such a common name and changed it back to Ashton Hayes after the ancient village. There's another link too with history for above the village stands Longley Hill, with a view westwards across Chester to the sea. This was the last land seen by sailors as they headed west from the Mersey.
