674 Northwich Flashes

There was great excitement at Northwich when the rare black-winged stilt nested at Neumann's Flash. The RSPB manned telescopes here and we were treated to a superb view of the birds with their long, pink legs. Three chicks hatched, but alas only one survived and later that died as well. When you learn that the parents don't feed their chicks but leave them to look after themselves it's a miracle the species hasn't died out. Still there's a wide variety of species to be seen while in addition to being a bird watchers' heaven, exploring the woodland and flower rich grassland makes for very easy walking on good, clear paths with a new view round every bend to enjoy.
