"Three stories high, of proportions not vast, though considerable", wrote Charlotte Bronte describing Thornfield Hall, Mr Rochester's home in Jane Eyre. But the hall was no work of fiction for high above Hathersage still stands her inspiration, the medieval castellated tower of the 16th century North Lees.
