590 Marton and Foxwist Green

Marton means farmstead by the pool, but the inhabitants of Marton Green had a nasty surprise in 1870 when a huge chasm appeared overnight. Caused by brine extraction, Marton Hole is now a quiet backwater and the only excitement is the arrival of fishermen or the occasional walker. The Whitegate Way, a disused railway line, and quiet field paths make for easy walking but don't miss the delightful Station House cafe which is run by volunteers.
