For sheer variety in a walk the countryside around Milnthorpe takes some beating. There's the wide expanse of the Kent Estuary with a skyline of Lakeland mountains beyond. The fell top is an intricate mosaic of mossy limestone pavement and coppiced ancient woodlands of rowan, yew, ash and hazel. There's the Domesday village of Beetham and finally Dallow Park has a magnificent herd of fallow deer. So next time you head for the Lakes try stopping off at Milnthorpe, you won't be disappointed.
