Defended on all sides by steep slopes and rocky cliffs the high moorland plateau of Combs Moss rises above Buxton like the Lost World of Conan Doyle. Certainly for walkers it has long been a lost world, but now anyone can go, for tomorrow the Countryside and Rights of Way Act takes effect in the Manchester area. You won't find any prehistoric animals up there, but you will find an Iron Age hillfort, spectacular climbing cliffs, marvellous views and a heather moor half the size of Kinder.
