"Who needs canals?", they said back in the 1960's when motorway building was all the rage. So they chopped up the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal into little bits and forgot about it. Fortunately a delightful stretch survives, though it's quite a surprise when you get to Stainton. One side of the Crossing Bridge is a peaceful waterway and the other a meadow. But there is a 50 million pound plan to open the final 14 miles to Kendal. Let's hope they are successful.
