Potter Fell is an inviting name suggesting gentle walking, and the little felltop tarns will not disappoint. Surprisingly though the tarns owe their origin to paper. The Victorian entrepreneur, James Cropper, needed lots of water for his mill, even the River Kent was not enough, so he turned the natural pools into reservoirs. Now, a century and a half later and after five generations, they still make paper at Burneside, the company chairman is still a Cropper and his name is still James.
