It may have been only a long step for the Sherwood outlaw, but for the rest of us the gritstone outcrop of Robin Hood's Stride is an impossible gulf. These two monoliths are also known as Mock Beggar's Hall and certainly from a distance their outline looks like the chimneys of a stately home. Locals would say to beggars "Sorry I've nothing for you, why not try up at the hall?" But perhaps they found refuge in the Hermit's Cave where you can still discern the 14th century carving of Christ on the cross.
