425 Bonsall

Going for a quiet walk near Matlock on a sunny Saturday sounds like the triumph of hope over experience, but the woods and footpaths were siesta still as we climbed to Bonsall. Here 17th century cottages are dominated by the much earlier St James Church and a magnificent stone cross. Look out for T'Owd Man of Bonsall in the market place, an early medieval carving of a Derbyshire lead miner, but as you descend from Masson Hill just think of the children who were paid one penny a day to keep the grooves in the miner's track clear of mud.
