Entering The Three Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires you take a step backwards in time. This is a pub for connoisseurs, where beer reigns supreme and behind the bar is a simple sign "Please do not ask for lager, as a smack in the face often offends!" Rough justice indeed and just down the valley lies Peter's Stone where, in 1815, a local murderer was executed and his body left dangling from a gibbet. But the reason we come every Spring to Cressbrook Dale is for the orchids - one of the finest displays in the Peak District.
