For those who like tramping over wild moorland a visit to Margery Hill and Outer Edge is a must. Easily reached by the Cut Gate track, which was "cut" in 1871 to link the Woodlands Valley with Penistone Market, the broad ridge of the Howden Moors stretches away for mile upon mile. This is the source of the Porter or Little Don River - it really does have two names - and, with dippers bobbing on the stones, its banks make a delightful return.
