Summits are very special places. Prehistoric man buried his dead on hilltops and to reach them mountaineers risk life and limb. So it's hardly surprising that to celebrate the formation of Rochdale's new borough they built a five-sided pillar at Top of Leach. It makes a grand objective for a moorland walk, but if you're a bit on the short side take a strong companion, you'll need one to lift you up to see the topograph - it's designed for giants.
