The Romans knew it as Bremetennacum veteranorum - quite a mouthful! But even the modern name Ribchester links with those times for it simply means Ribble Castle. With its garrison of 500 cavalrymen the fort stood at the intersection of two important Roman Roads and over the centuries countless relics have been unearthed. Certainly the finest is the Parade Helmet and although the original is in the British Museum, a convincing replica has pride of place in Ribchester's Roman Museum.
