Unwelcome medieval visitors to Pilsbury Castle were deterred by its massive earthworks and spectacular position, and the site still sees few visitors as you can't get there by car. Only quiet field paths and ancient trackways lead to this remote spot in the upper valley of the River Dove. Keen walkers can then visit Carder Low summit, but returning to Hartington is quite a culture shock, for here people swarm like honeybees and you are spoilt for choice between a cream tea, a quick pint or an ice cream.
