Never believe the forecast if you want to go walking, for though Manchester lay beneath the promised thick cloud, at Hebden Bridge the sun shone. The canal reflected a brilliant blue, while amongst the oaks and beeches of Colden Clough the sunlight dappled the stonework of ruined mills. Then climbing to the high pastures we followed the Pennine Way past ancient farmsteads and weavers cottages, before descending to the canal and Stubbing Wharf pub - a favourite with the Victorian bargees.
