175 Manners Wood

Romance is in the air as you stroll through the trees above Bakewell. Over 400 years ago the beautiful Dorothy Vernon, heiress of Haddon Hall, fell in love with John Manners, son of the Earl of Rutland. Her father forbade the match but her lover, disguised as a woodman, hid in the neighbouring forest. One night she managed to steal away and the pair eloped on horseback to Leicestershire. They were married the next morning and Manners Wood still bears his name.
