"Body found in bog!", ran the headlines. But the police quickly lost interest when the corpse found buried on Lindow Moss, near Wilmslow, turned out to be 2000 years old. It was a sacrifice to water gods, and there is still plenty of water here, including a brand-new lake edged with 'brandy bottle' water-lilies. Though named from the shape of the seed heads, the flowers also smell of alcohol, which explains the satisfied smile of the cow, slurping away up to its neck in the water.
