Stanton Moor is a little gem. Set amid encircling White Peak limestone, this isolated heathery plateau is crammed full of Bronze Age burial mounds and stone circles. The Nine Ladies Circle was built four thousand years ago, and legend says these are the figures of nine maidens turned to stone for their pagan dancing. The Cork Stone though is natural and the ascent, using its iron rings and footholds, is a must. In late summer, with acres of honey-scented heather and juicy, finger-staining bilberries, this is one of our favourite walks.
