Below us, in the deep green pools of Lathkill Dale, fat trout lay still, while by the shady banks moorhens and coots reared their downy young. Then joining the River Bradford we followed it upstream past sparkling weirs where a flash of brilliant yellow revealed a grey wagtail. These dales are lovely throughout the summer, but the third week in June there is an extra delight, for the ancient lead mining settlement of Youlgreave celebrates its well dressing. With its springs, wells, and even a water tank decorated with flower petals, the village will be at its best.
