Set amid some of the loveliest Cheshire countryside, the picture-book village of Prestbury has a prosperous air. Neat whitewashed cottages, shops, and restaurants are surrounded by immaculate farms and grand mansions, while sheep, cattle and horses graze peacefully in the fields. The name means Priest's Town, and this was a major monastic settlement in the Middle Ages. But Prestbury has always been an exclusive sort of place, for it was ex-directory even in 1086 when it was omitted from the Domesday Book.
