Rusty Westmorland

We have a yellowing press cutting from 1971 describing the ascent of Pillar Rock by Col "Rusty" Westmorland on his 85th birthday. He started young, with his first ascent in 1901 at the age of 15 and in his later years celebrated by repeating the climb on his 65th, his 75th and lastly his 85th birthdays. Rusty, as he was universally known, founded the Keswick Mountain Rescue team and was awarded the OBE in 1965 for his services to mountain rescue. This was the second mountain rescue team in the Lakes, the first being formed at Coniston by Jim Cameron.
