Rydal Mount

A steep lane leads to the sixteenth century farmhouse of Rydal Mount to which Wordsworth moved in 1813 with his family. The garden is unchanged and some of the original furniture remains. Here he lived with his wife Mary and his sister Dorothy until his death in 1850. Although made Poet Laureate in 1843 by Queen Victoria, Wordsworth wrote nothing in his official capacity.
