Leighton Moss

With the only breeding bitterns in the north-west, the RSPB Nature Reserve at Leighton Moss is a must for birdwatchers and on our first visit were amazed at our luck in hearing its booming call. Alas it turned out to be only a recording at the Visitor Centre! But there are some spectacular views of the wildlife, with bearded tits and marsh harriers, and you may also see otters, roe and red deer. Near the coast at Silverdale, the reserve is set among shallow meres and woodland and has North-west England's largest reedbed. There are Nature Trails and birdwatching hides, a Visitor Centre with wildlife exhibition, a shop and tearoom. Wheelchair access.
