490 Green Withens

Though only sixteen miles from the centre of Manchester, and just off a major road, the Oxygrains valley feels very remote indeed. And the lowering grey cloud heightened the sense of wilderness as we set off up this steep-sided clough with the children. Above the winding stream golden grass and orange bracken covered the slopes in a mass of glowing colour. Revisiting this walk we marvelled how three year old Heather had made light work of the climb, but the path does seem more difficult than it used to be, still this walk gives a taste of the high Pennine Moors and makes a splendid outing for a short winter's day.
