Though only sixteen miles from the centre of Manchester, and just off a major road, the Oxygrains valley feels very remote indeed. And the lowering grey cloud heightened the sense of wilderness as we set off up this steep-sided clough with the children. But above the winding stream golden grass and orange bracken covered the slopes in a mass of glowing colour. This walk gives a taste of the high Pennine Moors and makes a splendid family outing for a short winter's day.
