| 391 Horton | ||
| 'Muddy farmstead' might not be the smartest address, but that's what Horton means in Old English. Situated high above Rudyard Lake the village has some beautiful houses, a 13th century church containing a Wedgwood memorial, and the grave of Mary Brookes. When she died in 1787 Mary was 119 years old, so a bit of mud can't have done her any harm - maybe it's the secret of a long and happy life.
LOCATION: Two miles north-west of Leek START: Off A523, Rudyard Lake car park on B5331 by railway bridge (Grid reference SJ956578) DISTANCE: Five miles GRADE: Moderate, but can be muddy TIME: Three hours MAP: Explorer OL - White Peak Explorer - Wilmslow, Macclesfield Landranger 118 REFRESHMENTS: Hotel Rudyard |
