368 Peak Forest

next picture
Everybody loves donkeys - with their mournful faces, long ears and shaggy coats they are very appealing. And, at Freshfields Donkey Sanctuary, near the village of Peak Forest, you can meet and stroke dozens of them. But once Peak Forest was a different kind of refuge, for this was the Gretna Green of Derbyshire. Couples flocked here to be married amid the King's hunting forest, which made the parson very happy as he kept the wedding fees.
