As far back as 1861 Thornton-in-Craven was said to be "formerly a place of more consequence than at present" and in spite of its position, astride a main road, the village is still a backwater. Once they had a market and a five-day fair, yet now there isn't even a pub and as for parking - forget it! But by cunningly starting a mile away we walked through the village and up to East Marton, a delightful hamlet where there's a pub, cream teas and colourful barges moored on the canal.
