362 Holmes Chapel

next picture
Bullet holes in the church tower mark the Civil War at Holmes Chapel, but the village is lucky to be here at all. Situated on a knoll above the River Dane the little community nearly disappeared a century later, when a fire swept through destroying all but the Red Lion, the church and two cottages. Home today to commuters, how many of them know that their predecessors smuggled salt across the river in coffins!
