Like a giant rusting Meccano set the Anderton Boat Lift has stood forlorn for many years, but now, after a £7 million restoration, the lift is working again. Built in 1875 to move barges the 50 feet between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey, it was a world first triumph of Victorian engineering. With the boat lift, two canal tunnels and a lock for sea-going ships this walk is a real must for waterway enthusiasts.
