Myrddyn Phillips Hill Names - Manod Mawr North Top (Part 3) (continues from Part 2). The details in this magazine gives the area of the 'North Pole' to be just south-eastward of the 658m summit at approximately SH731456. We can but imagine how cold it must have been for the old quarry workers! Both of these farmers know the 661m hill as 'Manod Mawr'. Not categorical by any means, but if either name of 'Graig Lwyd' or 'North Pole' were to be used, I would favour the former, as I suspect the latter refers more to a certain area of hillside rather than to the hill itself. Hope some of this can be of help. It's lovely to share this information A.T., I'm only too happy responding to your questions, but I guess we may seem to be monopolising this message board of late. Let's hope this information is of interest to other hilly minded souls. |
