Myrddyn Phillips Recent Hill Survey (Part 6) Fron is mutated from Bron, which in this instance means Hillside (Bron can also mean breast), Llwyd translates as Brown, Grey or Pale. Therefore Y Fronllwyd could be translated as; The Brown (or Grey) Hillside, this is the name the hill is known as in the surrounding area of Bethesda and Nant Ffrancon. The name appears on current 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey maps as Fronllwydd, the definite article 'Y' having been dropped (an occurance not uncommon in spoken Welsh), the llwydd part of this name translates as; success or prosperity, an unlikely hill name when used in conjunction with Fron (Hillside). Although this name appears on the map lower on this hills actual hillside, Y Fronllwyd is the locally known name for the hill, and not just its lower section of hillside. |
